Neurophysiotherapy Skills 2006-2007

Session information

This is held at the Bobath Centre, East Finchley on Thursday mornings from 9.30 until 12.45 unless otherwise stated. Therapists who have done the Normal Movement modules (pre-requisite for adult Bobath course, or the 8-week Bobath (paediatric) course can monitor the first 4-8 weeks of this module by arrangement if they wish. Thereafter attendance is compulsory.
The focus of this module is on the analysis of movement in healthy/typical/typical and neurologically impaired people (adults and children). There is opportunity to learn and develop the use of specialised handling skills to enhance sensorimotor learning. 15 credits.

Aims:
Provide a theoretical and practical basis for the handling skills physiotherapists need to treat neurologically impaired people.

Objectives:
To demonstrate an understanding of practical and theoretical aspects of handling and different therapy approaches and adjuncts (e.g. Bobath, Motor Learning, use of FES, treadmill etc). To learn to recognise the components of movement which underlie motor performance in a healthy individual. To practise and to demonstrate the ability to execute specialised handling skills on healthy individuals.

General Content:
Lectures will cover basis of the Bobath Concept (in induction week); theoretical basis of handling techniques, for example tone reduction techniques and techniques to facilitate performance of functional skills. There will be discussions on different therapy approaches and the use of various management adjuncts. Laboratory sessions will involve supervised practise with each other involving ways of changing movement strategies in typical/healthy and neurologically impaired individuals. Discussions will take place regularly during the module to cover student-generated issues. Please note: this year the adult and paediatric students will split for weeks 5-8 and weeks 14-15 to enable more specific issues to be tackled.

Assessment:
Unseen written examination =40% (exam week); Practical examination 40%: half hour exam. (at a time to be decided); essay =20% (1500 words on different therapy approaches).
An essay on an approach to therapy intervention or a therapy adjunct will be required (Approaches: Motor Learning, Bobath, Peto, PNF; Adjuncts: muscle strengthening, treadmill training, FES, splints/orthoses, complementary and alternative therapies. )
Essay topic will be given. Each topic will be presented by students in seminar sessions during the module.
