MASTER OF SCIENCE & GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN ADVANCED PHYSIOTHERAPY

PROGRAMME IN CARDIORESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY

COURSE INFORMATION

2007-2008

Introduction

Physiotherapy students graduating from Diploma and BSc courses have a wide knowledge of biomedical sciences allied to clinical skills but after some years of clinical work often wish to extend their understanding of key areas, both in terms of basic understanding of conditions, and in developing better treatments. The philosophy of this course is to integrate the clinical and academic components with the emphasis upon the management of patients with cardiorespiratory disorders. Some flexibility in selection of courses allows for physiotherapists with particular interests to be accommodated. In addition, the course provides a thorough introduction to research through a taught course on research methods, carrying out a literature review, and conducting and writing up a project.

Aims

  • To provide an education in areas of modern biological and medical sciences relevant to physiotherapy
  • To provide an experience of research work in some aspect of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy and/or its related science
  • To provide an opportunity for improving physiotherapy skills and practice through course work and clinical placements, exploring the range of therapies available.

Programme Co-ordinators

Dr Eleanor Main – Portex Anaesthia Intensive Therapy, Respiratory and respiratory physiology, Institute of Child Health and Honorary Lecturer UCL.

Dr Jennifer Pryor - Research Fellow, Royal Brompton Hospital and Honorary Lecturer UCL, also Editor of Physiotherapy for Respiratory and Cardiac Problems (3rd edition, 2002)

Entrance Requirements

A first or second class BSc in Physiotherapy, or an approved Diploma in Physiotherapy, together with evidence of appropriate clinical and/or teaching experience and a commitment to continuing professional development.  We expect students to have had at least 2 years post-qualification clinical experience and UK state-registration is required. Note that we also run a short course in Basic Skills that helps overseas-trained physiotherapists to gain UK state registration (click here for details).

Application Procedure

Application forms can be obtained from the course administrator or, with other information as a Graduate Applications Pack from the General Enquiries Office, UCL, Gower St., London WC1E 6BT, UK.   Application forms may also be downloaded as PDF files for printing out and completing. When submitting a completed application form, candidates should include in section 32 (Supplementary Personal Statement) a brief statement of their reasons for applying for this course. Candidates should also give further details of physiotherapy or other experience, including both practice and courses attended, where these have not been given elsewhere in the application form.

Where possible, one referees should comment on your academic record and potential and the other on your professional experience.

State Registration and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy numbers, if available, should be included with the application. Overseas candidates must hold a physiotherapy qualification that is recognised by the UK State Registration Board and may have to take out an insurance policy in relation to clinical practice.

Closing Date for Applications

Early application or expression of interest is advisable. Applications should be submitted no later than the end of June for entry in September of the same year. Later applications will receive as sympathetic a hearing as is possible.

Selection Procedure

Where possible, candidates are expected to attend for interview. Overseas applicants who cannot attend for interview may be contacted by phone. In addition or alternatively, they may be asked to submit written work on both academic and clinical topics.
