Aims
- To provide physiotherapists:
- With a theoretical basis for clinical practice.
- With greater expertise in the management of clients with neurological
movement disorder.
- With enhanced awareness of other aspects of client management
e.g. working with other members of the rehabilitation team.
- With framework to develop evidence-based practice
- With the opportunity to investigate a particular area of interest
in depth.
Objectives
The course member will be able to:
- Discuss current knowledge of the development and control of
movement and neuropathology and relate this to adults and children
with neurological movement disorder.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply the handling skills practised
to management of clients.
- Identify different types of neurological movement disorder
and apply appropriate assessment and holistic management.
- Plan rational and effective programmes of management which
enhance the client's quality of life.
- Understand the role of the physiotherapist in the rehabilitation
team.
- Design and efficiently carry out a research study.
- Demonstrate an understanding of evidence-based practise.
Programme Co-Ordinator
Dr Margaret Mayston, Lecturer at UCL and previously Director of
the Bobath Centre. This course is run in conjunction with the Bobath
Centre in London.
Entrance Requirements
A first or second class BSc in Physiotherapy, or an approved Diploma
in Physiotherapy, together with evidence of appropriate clinical
and/or teaching experience and a commitment to continuing education
professional development. We expect students to have had at
least 2-3 years post-qualification clinical experience. For those
specialising in adult clients, UK state registration will be required
if clinical modules are to be taken in the UK.

When submitting a completed application form, candidates should
include in section 32 (Supplementary Personal Statement) a brief
statement of their reasons for applying for this course. Candidates
should also give further details of physiotherapy or other experience,
including both practice and courses attended, where these have not
been given elsewhere in the application form.
Where possible, one of your referees should comment on academic
record and potential and the other on your professional experience.
You must include with your application, your CSP and STATE REGISTRATION
NUMBER. Overseas candidates have to hold a physiotherapy qualification
that is recognised by the UK State Registration Board and may have
to take out an insurance policy in relation to clinical practice.
Closing Date for Applications
Early application or expression of interest is advisable. Applications
should be submitted no later than the end of June for entry in September
of the same year. Later applications will receive as sympathetic
a hearing as is possible.
Selection Procedure
Where possible, candidates are expected to attend for interview.
Overseas applicants who cannot attend for interview may be contacted
by phone. In addition or alternatively, they may be asked to submit
written work on both academic and clinical topics.
Course Members
There are up to 15 places including full-time and part-time students.
