Sports Injuries

This 20 credit module will cover the analysis of key principles and practice involved in prevention, assessment and treatment of, and the rehabilitation from, sports injuries.

Aims: Provide a theoretical and practical basis enabling the doctor to assess and treat the injured athlete.

Objectives:

(A) Be able to take a history from and conduct a physical examination of a patient suffering from a sports injury.

(B) For the more common sports injuries

1. Know the appropriate additional tests to order.

2. Be able to design a treatment programme based on sound principles of management.

3. Know how to organise a rehabilitation programme based on tested methods.

(C) Be able to advise on preventative measures designed to limit the risk of injury.

This will be a core (compulsory) course for MSc and Graduate Diploma students in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Course contents

A course of lectures in Zone 3 will cover the main principles involved in the assessment and treatment of sports injuries, in the design of a rehabilitation programme, and in best practice for injury prevention. Attendance at regular sports injury clinics will provide first hand experience of a range of conditions. Later in the course students will make informal case presentations during part of the clinic time.

Assessment

2 hour written exam (75%)

OSCE and Viva (25%)
