Locations:  Various on the Bloomsbury Campus (plus lab on Archway Campus)
Fridays from January 16th to February 27th (plus Oct 31st; OMI visit probably not Friday)

Aims: 

  • To critically examine the relation of physical activity to health in all its aspects.

  • To look at barriers to increased physical activity and at policy and practice in physical activity promotion.

  • To consider the particular problems related to participation in sport and physical activity for those with medical conditions.

  • To learn about specific issues related to participation in sport and physical activity for particular groups in the population including women, older people, children, the disabled.

  • To learn about underperformance syndrome.

Organisation
The module consists of lectures, a visit to the Olympic Medical Institute, one practical session in the Human Performance Lab, and a final student seminar session.  The full module is 15 credits. 
It is also possible to take parts of the module as 7.5 credits.  Sports, Exercise and Health (G006) consists of the more medical parts related to exercise and sport in various population groups.  Physical Activity, Fitness and Health (G010) consists of the parts related to understanding the health benefits of exercise and the agenda on physical activity promotion.  This session everyone will be on the full 15 credit module.

Study topics
In addition to the material in the lectures, certain self-study topics will be assigned (e.g. Infection in sport).

Assessment
There will be a 2 hour unseen written exam in Maythat will be 90% of the module assessment. The written exam paper will be 4 essay style questions chosen from 8 or 9 alternatives. 

Questions will be similar to those used previously for the two 7.5 credit modules that were merged to form the new 15 credit module.  Past exam papers can be found in the Library Digital Collections, the codes are SURG G007 (Sport, exercise and health) and SURG G010 (Physical activity and health)

The student seminars will also be assessed (10%).
