Course information, 2005/2006

Biomechanics (PHOL G017, 7.5 credit); Anatomy + Biomechanics (SURG G005, 15 credit)

Course organiser: Prof Don Grieve, Institute of Human Performance, UCL.

These 2 linked modules share a core of biomechanics lectures and workshops, but with some special classes aimed either at sports-related topics or patient-related ones. The 15 credit module has in addition a series of anatomy classes on the trunk and limbs. There are 2 slightly different versions of the 7.5 credit module, one for the Sports Physiotherapy students and the other for the non-sports physiotherapy programmes.

Objectives

Biomechanics
To understand key biomechanical principles and basic mechanical properties of tissues.
To apply these principles to normal posture and locomotion.
To understand how ideas from ergonomics and biomechanics can assist in designing treatment and aids for patients with injuries or diseases affecting posture and locomotion.
To review the relevant anatomy of the trunk and limbs.

Anatomy and Biomechanics
To learn the normal anatomy of the vertebral column, trunk and limbs.
To recognise common anatomical abnormalities of these structures.
To understand key biomechanical principles and how to apply them to locomotion, throwing, jumping and other actions involved in sports.
To be able to predict how sudden or repeated actions can lead to injury.

Anatomy sessions
The morning sessions (7 & 28Oct, 11 Nov) in the dissecting room at the Rockefeller Building are intended for self study with tutor guidance for SURGG005. It is recognized that students on PHOLG017 may also enjoy examining specimens and they are welcome to attend

The Lecture Powerpoint presentations that will be used in the lectures are all on the UCL website. They were created with Powerpoint 2002 It is assumed that you will have looked at them in advance of a lecture. It may prove helpful to print them out (2slides/page, grayscale) so that you can annotate them during a lecture. Some of the slides contain GIF animations (which will not print out!). If you wish to examine their contents, you could copy and paste them to the animation pack in Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop and export the images from there. Probably not worth the effort. It is intended to place further Powerpoints on the UCL site as feedback after each workshop.
